We all want our home to be safe from unwanted intruders, but when it comes to actually protection of our home is not an easy task to achieve. You are not going to be able to see everything and be everywhere. This is just one of the reasons home video security systems have become more popular. The video cameras are looking at all the different parts of your property and home all at the same time. From the safety and seclusion of your home you can observe all that is going on around your home.
When it comes to home video security there are two main types of cameras to choose from wired and wireless. Wired cameras have been around for a long time and are very reliable. Wireless cameras are newer technology where by the data cable has been replaced with a transmitter.
Both types of cameras require electricity to operate. There are some models that are battery operated, which eliminates the need for an outlet to be near by the camera. However, the battery will eventually need to be charged or replaced, so these cameras are not the best type to install in a hard to get to place.
Watching the babysitter
How many times have you heard of babysitter or nanny horror stories? No matter how well you prescreen, interview and do background checks the wrong kind of person can be hired. Installing a set of home video security cameras inside of your home gives you the ability to monitor the babysitter or nanny. Now you know how your children are being taken care of… or not.
Are low cost solutions just as good?
Not always. You could fashion together a simple home video surveillance system using inexpensive web cams. Web cams are designed for up close video recording. The image quality is very poor when attempting to record something that is several feet away. It does not work well in a low light situation.
Some home video security systems use a wireless IP-based system with web-cam surveillance. An IP-based system uses digital technology to capture and record information from the web-cams and stores it on a computer hard disk, much like a DVR for your satellite or cable box.
Before purchasing a home video security system, there are a few important questions that you need to ask yourself.
- How many cameras do I need?
- Where will the cameras be located?
- Is there electricity near by each potential camera location? If not, how difficult will it be to have electricity run there?
- How many cameras will be mounted outside? What type of protective enclosure will the camera be inside of?
